What does it mean to be an apprentice of Jesus?

In this article, we examine what it means to be an apprentice—to be with Jesus.

The apostles experienced this daily, and we have that same opportunity today.

The Three D’s of Discipleship Discover where you are: When I first began to think about involving more of my life with Jesus, I had not really understood that Jesus actually wanted to be more involved with me!

Jesus was my Savior and I came to Him with spiritual matters or when I was really in trouble.

God has designed each of us for a purpose in His kingdom.

As followers of Jesus, we are all citizens in God’s kingdom.

Kingdom Leaders are those who: (1) are substantial influencers; (2) have a kingdom view; (3) desire to glorify Him in everything; (4) have been called by God for a role in His kingdom on earth; (5) can multiply themselves right where they are; and (6) are mission-minded, actively looking for impact and transformation.

Decide to Be With Jesus The major habit to develop is simple: pray about everything.

This is true whether I own a company or just work in one; whether I teach a Bible study or “teach” others by my actions and loving words at work; whether I care for my family at home or care for my neighbor at work.

My life’s verse is 1 Cor 10:31 – “whether you eat or drink, or whatsoever you do, do all to the glory of God.” As we spend time with Jesus and learn from Him, we can apply His wisdom in choosing and practicing our vocation.

Reflecting Jesus’ Character The second characteristic of being with Jesus is seeking to become like Him in every way I can.

As the Father has sent me, I am sending you.” If God called me to my vocation, then He wants me to be sent into that world in the same way Jesus was sent into this world.

Through the power of the Holy Spirit, I have an opportunity to respond to my world in God-honoring ways.

This is the essence of 21st Century Apprenticeship—not a medieval concept, but a vital, living relationship with Jesus Christ that transforms how we live, work, and serve in our modern world.
